I find it difficult, if not impossible, to believe that anyone can get through any given day in our society without a sense of humor. Granted, on the surface there do seem to be fewer current events that can inspire a giggle. However, if we examine the events in our personal lives, I am convinced there is plenty of material to motivate a little humor. I do recognize that the ability to laugh in the face of...shall we say questionable circumstances, requires a great deal more effort in some, and may take a bit more time to cultivate. Not all of us were blessed with a father who wore trick bowties and worshipped Spike Jones. In the long run though, it all boils down to perspective. Take for instance the morning your children choose to paint the entire livingroom, and themselves, with a large bottle of boysenberry jam. Believe it or not, you have a choice here. Your first reaction might lead you to beat them all soundly and spend the rest of the day weeping piteously ...or...in the process of bleaching the carpet and furniture, you can visualize the day when they have small children. You now have plenty of time to plot how you will plant the idea in the innocent minds of your grandchildren how fun it would be to paint all the books in the bookcase with a large bottle of carpenters' glue. If that doesn't inspire a little levity, I don't know what will.
Of course not all these exercises in humor are brought on by our offspring. Things could always be worse. Even the forces of nature can challenge the most lighthearted of spirits. Take for instance the time my brother was in Korea, thousands of miles away from his family and got food poisoning. As he was praying to the porcelain god and wondering if things could possibly get any worse, a monsoon struck which wiped out all the electricity...in the dead of night. His first thought was to throw a pity-party and then realized there was no one around to invite to it. Hysterical laughter was his only option at this point and to this day our entire family gets a real belly-laugh out of that one.
So the next time your children have a food fight with 4 dozen eggs, and thousands of miles away from your family sounds awfully inviting, just remember you could also be puking your guts out during a hurricane in the middle of the night in Korea.
