Many houses have basement space. Most of us are guilty of using the space as a bit of a junk storage area. There are all sorts of things down there, from bikes and skates the kids have outgrown to boxes of stuff we no longer have a space for. We keep these things because they may come in handy one day so we do not want to throw them out. What about using the space properly as part of your home? You can extend your living space by at least one extra room. Here are 10 ideas to get you going:
1. Add a Window
One of the first things to consider is how you can get a natural light source into the area, and this largely depends on whether the basement is located completely below ground or whether there is a foot or so on one side of the building where the basement actually comes above ground level. If you have this foot or so above ground level, you could consider taking advantage of it by having a window installed here. This long, narrow window will allow natural light to flood the area and make it more inviting and less claustrophobic.
2. Consider a Fire Place
Heating the basement space is going to be a must if you are going to try and use it as a constant part of the living area. You could consider a fireplace. You may have a chimney breast within the house that can be tapped into that will allow the smoke to go up through the house. Conversely, you may have a more modern fuel option such as gas or electricity, in which case the fireplace can make an excellent focal point for your basement.
3. An Extra Lounge
Once you have reclaimed the space and ditched the junk, you need to decide on the best use of the space. One option is to consider a second lounge room area. This can be excellent if you have growing teens and you do not really want hordes of their friends up in the bedrooms. Plus, you will be one of the coolest parents on the block!
4. A Home Office
If you need space to work from home then the basement could make an excellent home office. You can distance yourself from the distractions of home life and get lots of work done while still in the comfort of your own home.
5. A Play Room
Younger kids could benefit from a playroom space in the basement. Just think, you will no longer have the clutter of toys and the noise of computer games in your main house. No one will be fighting over whose bedroom is used and who has to clear up afterwards!
6. A Spare Bedroom
The basement space could solve the problem of where you have guests sleep when they come to visit. Simply turn it into a stunning bedroom space that your guests will love to stay in.
7. A Games Room
If you really enjoy a game of pool but have never had the space for a pool table, then perhaps your basement space would be best used as a game room. Again, a nice wooden floor, a couple of easy chairs and a pool table make an area the whole family will love.
8. A Wet Room
If you have the space, you could use one section of the basement space as a wet room. Tiled walls and floors that slope gently to the middle make this room perfect for an excellent walk-in shower space. This is great if you have some gym equipment in your basement. If you are using the bulk of the space as a guest bedroom, it is a nice feature to offer guests.
9. More Than One Room
If the space allows, you may want to consider having the space made into more than one room. Again, this will depend on how big the basement space is. A bathroom is a popular inclusion as this means you do not have to keep going back to the main house.
10. The Teen Annex
Go the whole hog and make the area into four rooms: a small shower / bathroom, a small fitted kitchen, a bedroom and lounge area. Suddenly, you have created an excellent first home for a teen.
